History of the Astronomical Institute of Charles University in brief

The Astronomical Institute of Charles University in Prague was founded by August Seydler (1849-1891), professor of theoretical physics and astronomy. At first the Institute was located in a villa in Letna and then, for a long time, in the Svedska street in Smichov (the photograph bellow), a district of Prague. Nowadays, the Astronomical Institute is a part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and is located in the Troja campus.

The history of the Astronomical Institute in the years 1889-1939 was a topic of the L. Kovar's diploma thesis (in Czech). It contains interesting information about scientific research and workers of our Institute in that time period. The text was adapted for this server by Pavel Kraus and Michal Dovciak.
