The Earth is visible as a black area in the lower left corner of the photo while the Earth's atmosphere is defined by two distinct bands of red and blue light, located in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Northern Lights are visible to the right. This picture reveals that Northern Lights reach far into the thin areas of the atmosphere and into space.
